A dancer who picks up a saxophone, or does a duet with a guitarist. The drummer who suddenly appears in a dancing trio. The Utrecht dance company De Dansers makes dance performances that are also pop concerts. They are really good at that. After a while you no longer know who the musicians are and who the dancers are, the players can do both. Movement and music-making go together here.
This time it is about the support you find with others, about attention for each other. The rhythm is determined by how dancers and musicians follow each other very precisely. From faster, energetic numbers to subdued (self-written) songs: ‘Carried by those hands I trust, I’m floating to those mountaintops’. If we share everything with each other, we can cope with the difficulties of life.
After the rousing dance concert Shake Shake Shake, which turned the venue upside down at Tweetakt in 2020, artistic directors Guy Corneille and Josephine van Rheenen wanted to continue with the same dancers and musicians. In Hush, they come together again in the border area between dance performance and pop concert. Corneille, who herself participates on stage: This time it’s all about sensitivity, really listening attentively to each other and finding comfort in that encounter. Because in order to be able to carry the world, it helps not to be alone.” Van Rheenen, who created the choreography together with the dancers and musicians: I had had enough of people who talk louder and louder because what they say seems more important. So I wanted to do an exercise in listening, nuance, softening with these players. To allow sensitivity on stage and from there to meet each other and see where that takes us.’
"Dancing with full dedication and singing flawlessly: The Dancers continue to surprise in dance concert Hush."
"The Dancers have a patent on it; the ultimate symbiosis between dance and music is their clear signature. The musicians of this Utrecht youth dance company move and the dancers also play instruments."
