HULLO, BU-BYE, KOKO, COME IN

Putuma turns herself into a projection screen and plays with the names, memories and legacies of black, queer women made (in)visible in art and society. In a dialogue between past and present, she reflects on her success and position as a black artist in white institutions from the question 'Why are you always hijacking our narratives with your gaze?'

Hullo, Bu-Bye, Koko, Come In is a multimedia stage adaptation of Koleka Putuma's (South Africa) poetry collection of the same name. Fusing sound, visual design and projection mapping, she creates a multimedia performance of her poems for the stage, radically questioning the relationship between audience and performers.

Koleka Putuma is at Afrovibes for the third time. She joined the festival as artist-in-residence in 2017. Previously she performed at venues including Wiener Festwochen 2021, Condeduque Cultural Centre Madrid 2021, Market Theatre Johannesburg 2021, National Arts Festival SA 2022.

"As a work of theatre, Hullo, Bu-Bye, Koko, Come In is incredibly layered, but most importantly, accessible on multiple levels. For over an hour, Putuma is every woman, harbouring no pretences of speaking [solely] to the converted."
